Scholarships

The Hohnen Scholarship, the Deeble Scholarship and the Shakespeare Awards were established in the memory of people who have made an outstanding contribution to Scouting in the ACT.

The scholarships are awarded upon the recommendation of Scouts ACT, which conducts an independent selection process.

Ross Hohnen Memorial International Scholarship

Introduced in 2004, the scholarship recognises the life and contribution to Scouting both in the ACT and across Australia of Ross Hohnen. Ross joined the Scout Movement in 1925 as a Cub, and held many senior roles throughout his life. He was the first president of the new ACT Branch when it was created in 1981 and was instrumental in establishing the ASF. Read more about Ross here.

Purpose

This scholarship assists a Rover or a young Leader from the ACT Branch to attend a major international Scouting event.

The recipient will benefit from exposure to a wider range of Scouting activities and programs, and the ways and means of delivering those programs, than would normally be available in Australia. On their return home, it is expected that the recipient will be able to incorporate new methods and experiences gained whilst overseas to their usual Scouting role.

Amount

A scholarship of up to A$2,500 is granted annually. If there are two equally meritorious applicants for the scholarship in a year, an award of up to $A2,500 may be made to each applicant.

Eligibility

The scholarship is available to an ACT Rover Scout or a young Leader (18-30 years old).

Jack Deeble Memorial Youth Development Scholarship

Introduced in 2004, the scholarship recognises the life and contribution to Scouting in the ACT of Jack Deeble. Jack joined the Scout Movement in 1934 as a Cub, and held many senior roles throughout his life. He was the first Chairman of the new ACT Branch when it was created in 1981. Read more about Jack here.

Purpose

This scholarship assists a Scout or Venturer, or a number of Scouts or Venturers, to attend an International Scouting event or a unique National Scouting event that will expose them to a wider range of Scouting activities, programs and methods than would normally be available in their home Unit.

The benefits to the Scouting Movement in the ACT are the development of young people, and likely enhanced retention rates. On their return to their Unit, it is expected that the recipient will be able to incorporate new or different experiences into their usual Scouting activities.

Amount

A scholarship of up to A$2,500 is granted annually. If there are two equally meritorious applicants for the scholarship in a year, an award of up to $A2,500 may be made to each applicant.

The scholarship can be used to contribute to the costs of travel, activity fees, departure taxes, transfer fees, accommodation or a combination of any or all of these.

Eligibility

The scholarship is available to an ACT Scout or Venturer, or a number of Scouts or Venturers (submitting a single group application form).

Criteria

  • The benefit to Scouting and/or the youth of the ACT arising from attendance at the major activity.
  • The expected costs.
