Camp Cottermouth

The reconstruction of Camp Cottermouth after its total destruction in the 2003 bushfires is the ASF’s single most significant contribution to Scouts ACT, and we are proud of it.

Faced with a true blank canvas, Scouts ACT, working with the ASF, took the brave step to re-imagine the camp and to reposition it for a new and better future.

Fifteen years on from its rebirth, Scouts ACT is again considering what it needs the Camp to deliver. There are exciting possibilities to improve the basic camping experience, and to expand ‘adventurous activities’ on site. For example:

  • an additional multi-function venue is needed for training, meetings and functions because The Shakespeare Centre is heavily booked throughout the year;
  • the amenities block is ageing and in need of refurbishment;
  • revival of the currently decommissioned ‘Challenge Valley’ adventure zone would be a game-changing enhancement of the camp.

The ASF is keen to contribute to the future development of Camp Cottermouth.

More about Camp Cottermouth at its website.

The active zone was relocated to a more expansive section of the site which is better suited for camping and activities, especially for the large-scale signature events like Cuboree, which see more than 600 youth and leaders on site for a week of activities. Modern bunkhouse style cabins were built to serve the school tourism market. This is supported by a large pleasant dining area with commercial kitchen, known as The Shakespeare Centre. This flexible facility is in constant use by Scouting and external customers for training, meetings, and functions.

The ‘new’ Camp Cottermouth has been a great success.
